AJ just turned 6 months a few days ago and what a couple of weeks it has been. We’ve been super lucky having 2 kids that have slept through the night from a young age. AJ has always been a touch more sensitive than Charlotte but then they both had 2 slightly different starts, AJ: didn’t eat for the first 3 days & we stayed up to try to comfort him; Charlotte was healthy as an ox so we let her cry out from an early age. AJ started sleeping through 1st week. Charlotte, week 5. Either way – happy days and very lucky. HOWEVER about 3 weeks ago, AJ decided it was time to start waking up again in the middle of the night. Now admittedly I’m a touch more militant than hubby. My view is night time is for sleeping – not for rocking/feeding. PLUS AJ had been working his way onto some good solids action from about 4 months. This kid was not hungry and he hasn’t needed his nappy changed during the night for months. So what the hell was up! I was not impressed. We let him cry it out. There were a few nights it was all too much for us and there was some rocking (I tried feeding once and he just wasn’t interested!). We had a couple of nights where he cried and was awake at 11pm, 1am, 3am, 5am and then 7am to start the day. He wasn’t even sleeping in-between. I was going a little spare as I can’t handle heavily broken sleep. So we took action and the last few nights he’s been doing much better. In fact last night he went from 7pm, little moan at 8pm ish and then straight through til 7.15am this morning!! In truth all we did was make sure he was warm all night (He’s a cold baby and takes after me); very warm baby grows etc and made sure he was well fed before bedtime.
Was that really the solution? I think he’s been going through some life changes recently. He’s been doing a lot of dribbling and gnawing lately and so we suspect the teeth were on the move. Also this last week he’s been rolling! He doesn’t really do it during the day but has done a lot during the night. I think that this has been the main reason for his wakings recently, he’s been rolling over half asleep and bumping to the cot, finding himself in an uncomfortable position and waking himself up! Like he’s trying to figure out what its all about, after all he’s been pretty stationary for the last 6 months, suddenly he can move but he’s never had to worry about special awareness before. All a learning and developmental curve. I do remember different people I have spoken with mentioning that when the babies could sleep on their side or on their back they started sleeping through the night so it’s gotta be a good thing!
